LENT BEGINS THIS WEEK The chief purpose of Lent is preparation for the celebrations of Easter, the greatest festival of the Christian Church. Therefore the focus of the Lenten season is on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ for our sins. The liturgical color of Lent is purple, the color of repentance and sorrow for sins. During Lent the Gloria in Excelsis is dropped and the Kyrie added.

ASH WEDNESDAY liturgies, with the imposition of ashes, will be held at Noon and at 7:00 p.m. this Wednesday. The ashes remind us of our sinfulness and mortality. They are placed on our foreheads in the shape of a cross to remind us of the forgiveness granted us through the suffering and death of Christ and .the gift of eternal life we have received. The Noon service is a said service and the 7:00 service is sung.
